For Diana, Princess of Our Hearts

Who's fault but our own?
Oh where to lay the blame
although we may all mourn and weep
we were all pawns in the game.

We bought the new stories that they wrote
no-one dragged us, screaming, by our throats
we sought the pictures for just a sight
of our beautiful princess shining in the night.

Who could have foreseen the tragedy
that has come to her poor family
that has shaken the nation and the world
as this sad day has unfurled

Into a nightmare that we could never have dreamed
when she once said she would never be queen
and how will we ever come to terms
with the lessons we must now surely learn.

For she is gone in such a cruel way
that we could never have foreseen yesterday
and never again will the world be
quite such a beautiful place for you or for me.

She was our star, to our lives she gave hope
a way of showing us all how to cope
for when her life was hard you could see
her optimism shining through like a light for you and me.
Oh why was she killed by the paparazzi?

But who's fault was it but our own?
Have we really the right to cry and to moan?
She is gone forever, but will always stay
in our hearts, the role she most wanted to play.
